Machines Italia White Paper: Expecting More Value From Industrial Equipment Manufacturers
Industrial equipment manufacturers today are asked for a vast array of product enhancements and services, and customers increasingly want more of such value-added features. But how can industrial equipment manufacturers provide more in these tough economic times, and still sustain profitability?
The answers can be found in data compiled by the Next Generation Manufacturing (NGM) Study, a 2009 research initiative that assessed how manufacturers (including 410 industrial equipment manufacturers) are progressing with key corporate strategies to succeed into the next generation. Expecting More Value from Industrial Equipment Manufacturers examines four strategies — customer-focused innovation, human-capital management, superior processes/process improvements, and supply-chain management and collaboration — that help industrial equipment manufacturers succeed today and tomorrow in satisfying customer demands for more value at lower costs. In addition, this report captures the voice of those customers, identifying what equipment buyers consider most valuable — and what they think of the ability of their equipment providers to succeed at key strategies.

Machines Italia White Paper: Machinery Manufacturer Performance Benchmarks
Are your machinery manufacturers operating at world-class levels? It's an important question, the answer to which will determine whether you are getting optimum value from current vendors. To find out, though, you have to understand the productivity and profitability of these vendors' operations — and how well their manufacturing acumen translates into improved productivity and profitability at your organization.
Having the right benchmarks — Machinery Manufacturer Performance Benchmarks — against which to assess your machinery manufacturers is a huge step in evaluating equipment providers, and can also help with a critical second step: persuading your machinery manufacturers to share metrics so that you can gain insights into their ability to aid your organization.

Italy's Radici plans to buy Ohio compounder and recycler Michael Day
Compounder and recycler Michael Day Enterprises Inc. has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and expects to be sold to Italy's Radici Group for $5.7 million, unless another buyer comes forward in the next 60 days.
Radici Group of Bergamo, Italy, makes plastics, chemicals and fibers and has annual sales of $1.8 billion. Radici has worked with MDE as a supplier at various points over MDE's history, Cain said.
Radici's plastics business had operated its own North American compounding plant in Blacksburg, S.C., until closing it in 2007 because of declining sales in the region. In late 2007, Radici marketing and technical service director Giovanni Pioltini told Plastics News that Radici "is not giving up on the North American market," and would continue to serve the region via imports and distribution sales.
Radici continues to operate a plant making polymer-based Spandex synthetic fibers in Gastonia, N.C.

Paragon D&E Installs Largest Milling Machine of its Kind in the World
Paragon D&E has installed the largest double gantry 5-axis FIDIA milling machine about the size and length of a car wash that can easily cut the entire fuselage of an F-22 Raptor fighter jet within a hair's width of tolerance.
"Our new FIDIA milling machine represents a significant leap forward for Paragon D&E as we supply industries that demand highly precise molds and machined parts that are also very large," said David Muir, president of the Grand Rapids-based company that serves the aerospace, alternative energy, automotive, heavy truck, nuclear, and other industries.
Purchased and installed a cost of $3.5 million, the double gantry 5-axis milling machine has a table 60 feet by 12 feet with virtually unlimited weight capacity. As a five-axis machine, the FIDIA precisely controls the position of cutters as they move along the length, width, and depth of the material, but also as the machining head is rotated along two additional axis. The machine was built by FIDIA S.p.A., San Mauro Torinese, Italy.
"The capabilities of the FIDIA will allow us to fabricate very large parts and molds with very sophisticated shapes," said Muir, 36. "This is particularly important in the aerospace, automotive and any other industries that require curved surfaces to accommodate the aerodynamics of their products."

Italian Investment In The US - An Italian "Breeze" Provides Jobs To Indiana's Green Manufacturing Base
For Immediate Release: CHICAGO (USA) - Italian wind turbine manufacturer Brevini Wind intends to start production on a new facility in Indiana by the end of the third quarter of 2010. The original start date was for the first quarter in 2011, however interest generated in the company at the American Wind Energy Association's annual conference lead its executives to a decision to speed up the company's timetable regarding the project.
The Italian company selected the region because of the outstanding technical talent pool as well as a strong base of suppliers and contractors. The manufacturing facility will employ 400 people once opened.
In addition to manufacturing activities, Brevini USA will move its US headquarters to the region that itself will employ 50 people once its relocation has finished.
In a time when "green" is the new buzzword, it is refreshing to see a company actually investing in the moment instead of just talking. The US alternative energy market is small, but with incentives from Congress and a push to wean itself of foreign energy, it is a growing sector. As noted by a recent report by the United Nations, wind, solar, and other clean technologies will attract $140 billion in investment, compared with $110 billion for gas and coal. The investment made by Brevini Wind will create jobs in America, support a local supply base, and provide innovative technology to an emerging market sector. ...

"Customization: The Advantage Italian Original Equipment Manufacturers Bring to the U.S."
During the last decade, the equipment manufacturing industry has radically changed. Mergers, acquisitions and takeovers made small machinery manufacturers part of multinational corporations, which promptly reduced and standardized product lines. Product development and engineering departments saw their budgets slashed. Many original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) - known for introducing new technologies and engineering custom solutions for their customers - were forced into offering only standardized product lines. Many companies turned to machine fabricators for their production needs. Machine fabricators provided customized machinery, but at the expense of quality and with little or no guarantees. The quality assurance expected from OEMs simply was not a concern of many machine fabricators.
This situation left U.S. manufacturers in a bind, but provided an excellent opportunity for Italian machinery manufacturers to fill the gap, while expanding their market share...
